The main armament of Type 99A2 is a 2-plane stabilized 125 mm smoothbore gun (42 rounds are carried, including 22 in the automatic loader) with a carousel-style automatic loader and the gun may be fired under both computerized and manual control systems. The rate of fire is 8 rounds per minute using the automatic loader.

Its ammunition includes Armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot (APFSDS-T), High explosive anti-tank (HEAT), Frag-HE-T, and gun-launched anti-tank missiles (ATGM).

The MBT 3000 or VT-4’s gun has a 125 mm smoothbore, which can fire various shells including: kinetic energy penetrator, high explosive squash head (HESH) and high explosive anti-tank warhead (HEAT). In addition, the main gun can fire anti-tank missiles with a maximum range of 5km.

The main gun can fire a new APFSDS round that is capable of penetrating 1000 millimetres of RHA, presumably at a distance of 2km. The M1A2’s armour consists of depleted uranium mesh-reinforced composite armour and has been upgraded third-generation depleted uranium armour components with graphite coating. The main armament of the M1A2 is the M256A1 120 mm smoothbore gun (42 rounds), designed by Rheinmetall AG of Germany, manufactured under license. Its secondary armament includes 12.7 mm M2HB heavy machine gun with (900) rounds and two 7.62 mm M240 machine guns with (10,400) rounds (1 pintle-mounted, 1 coaxial).
